CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Sunstars

MICHAEL awoke outside of the Darklord’s camp, cold and more or less unarmed. Zooni and Iandra stood fifty paces uphill with their arms crossed. Spotty memories of being thrown down the hill confused him.

The dragons on his father’s hill seemed to be sleeping, and he didn’t see their riders. All he had to do was walk into his father’s small camp and he would be free of the Darklord’s Sunstars. Without hesitation, he climbed the hill to confront the two women.

Zooni handed Iandra something that disappeared into a belt pouch.

“I need my property,” he said.

“You have your life,” Zooni said. “Did you not hear the Darklord? Are you particularly stupid?”

“Stubborn,” Iandra said.

“I am tired of his stubbornness and his stupidity,” Zooni said.

Iandra shrugged.

Michael faced the two women, wishing he could trust them. The two Sunstars had weapons and the high ground. “Elizabeth and I were friends. I want to help her if I can.”

“What you want does not matter.” A breeze twisted Zooni’s brown hair. Light from the dazzling sky of this world framed her silhouette. Although her eyes were bright, her expression lacked emotion.

Michael clenched his jaw. “What does matter? What do you want from me?”

She looked at her sister, then Michael. “I want you to return to Blue Point where you belong. I want to return to the Qass. I would like, just once, to win a bet with my sister.”

“Where is my gun? Can you tell me that at least?”

She nodded toward her warhorse.

Michael glanced at the bags behind the heavy saddle. Iandra walked to the horse, retrieved his property, and threw it at his feet.

He stared at them, then knelt to inventory his things. His pistol and two extra magazines had been loaded. Food of some sort was wrapped in a waxy burlap bundle. He looked up at them. “You want me gone.”

“We do,” Zooni said.

“That isn’t what the Darklord wants,” he said, watching their reaction.

“All hail the Darklord,” Zooni said dryly.

“Stubborn and stupid, like you said,” Iandra said.

The rest of his escape was easier. He tried not to resent the bruises and twisted joints the Sunstars had given him before, during, or after throwing him down the hill. Recent events were less than clear. He walked through into the small valley between the expansive hills and crossed a stream that led to a larger river. Wet, tired, and hungry, he hiked upward toward his waiting father and the two dragon riders who were not ethnically Dragonslayers but enjoyed more of his father’s respect than he did all the same.

“That was a circus,” Joshua said.

“Thanks for the help.”

His father grunted. “I am not ready for open war against the Darklord. Our dragons need time to heal. Why do think I have been stalling? As it is, this little visit will force me to sue for peace, eventually.”

“Why is that?” Michael lowered his pack to the ground. The Sunstars had torn one strap. Carrying it would be a chore.

“I understand she is from your world,” Joshua said.
